This year marks the 75th anniversary of Cutty Sark’s presence on Canadian shelves. 75 years ago, in 1936, Charton-Hobbs founder Basil D. Hobbs began importing the blended Scotch whisky to Canada. It’s pretty incredible that the family import agency is still exclusively representing this super popular whisky all these years later. What other liquor products can you think of currently in our stores that were available for our grandparents to buy in the 30’s? To celebrate this milestone, the brand released a limited edition, bespoke 75 year anniversary gift box (watch for it in local stores). They’ve also released a 25 year old whisky (from mature Speyside malts), and the new Cutty Black (dark, Islay peatiness) in select markets.

Launched in 1923 by Berry Bros & Rudd, and easily recognized since for its distinctive label, Cutty Sark is a blend of nearly 20 fine single malts (mainly Speyside), including The Macallan and Highland Park. It is one of the top best selling blended whiskies in the world, formulated to be light in colour and body, unlike many of the blends on the market at that time. This easy-drinking whisky is matured in American oak, imparting sweet citrus, dry grass and mild tropical fruit notes. The clean palate shows bright lemon, creamy vanilla and honeyed cereal, with a warming spiced maltiness on the finish. Unobtrusive, nonaggressive and somehow familiar, this tested and true whisky has stood the test of time, and is a well priced introduction to blended Scotch whisky.

The Cutty Sark ship has always featured on the whisky’s label, an inspiration to embrace adventure. The ship was built for speed and named after a young witch dressed in a ‘cutty sark’ (short shirt), who could run as fast as the wind, from Scottish poet Robert Burns’ celebrated poem Tam O’Shanter. Cutty Sark was bootlegged in the USA during Prohibition by smuggler Captain Bill McCoy. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the blend’s impeccable reputation led to it becoming the best-selling Scotch whisky in the USA, selling more than 1 million cases per year.
