Five Great Sandwiches in Victoria to Try Now.

The sandwich has come a long way from when it was first invented by a late night card shark 250 years ago. Sir John Montagu (appointed The Earl of Sandwich) wanted meat between slices of bread so he could keep his fingers clean and his hands on his cards. Little did he know this convenient little snack would become one of the most popular lunch foods to date: they’re compact, portable, and easily a complete meal. In Victoria, sandwich makers know how to do it right. With locally sourced, organic, and house-made ingredients, here are five of the city’s top favorites:

The Vegan Sandwich, Wildfire Bakery

Saba Sub, The Reef

Saba-Sub-The-Reef

This sandwich is a tribute to the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba. Known as the “unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean Sea”, the island is rich in history and was a dominant fishing culture in the 17th and 18th centuries.  Sink your teeth into a bite of crispy Bajan marinated tilapia with kaffir lime aioli, house made slaw, and fresh tomato salsa on a brioche bun. Served with a choice of greens, yam fries, or plantain chips $14. Have it on a gluten free bun for an extra $1
