Intrigue is the solo project of Gray Monk co-winemaker Roger Wong (he makes their reds and sparkling wines). Those following the BC wine industry for some time may also remember Wong from a superstar Riesling he crafted in the early 2000’s called Focus, but unfortunately the fires in 2003 thwarted his plans to continue with the brand. He started Intrigue Wines with his wife and another couple in 2008. The name is apt, since there is an air of intrigue about the winery – all the partners have other jobs and commitments, and the winery doesn’t have a tasting room to welcome guests. That said, these are VQA wines and can be tracked down through VQA stores, if you find them before they’re gone! Future plans include a reserve Riesling (he was the original winemaker at Pinot Reach before it became Tantalus).

This Riesling is a pleasing pour – off dry, but with crisp acidity to balance. Peach and citrus aromas lead to a round palate of Granny Smith apple, citrus, white peach and spice. Pair when you have a crowd – this will please wine newbies plus more tested palates. Try with lemongrass coloured Thai cuisine or lighter seafood dishes.
