JENTSCH CELLARS

We are one of 12 Proud Members of the Official Golden Mile Bench Sub DVA Application! Over 63 acres of the prestigious Golden Mile Bench in Oliver, BC are home to C.C. Jentsch Cellars where the Jentsch family has been farming fruit since 1929. Chris Jentsch has been a farmer his whole life, growing cherries first and then planting to vinifera grapes in 2004, selling to large wineries. When his grape contracts expired he made the decision to start on his own!

Winemaker Amber Pratt (Jones) joined him in 2013 and is now crafting Chris Jentsch’s (pronounced Yen-ch, and rhymes with bench) estate-grown fruit into five premium labels that are almost as hard to pronounce as his last name. Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Syrah, 'The Dance' (rose) and 'The Chase' establish his portfolio. 'The Chase' and its sister rose 'The Dance' are both Bordeaux-style blends, but not just your typical three-grape brew, these wines boast 5 of the 6 classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Petite Verdot.

At C.C. Jentsch Cellars, the focus on crafting the finest fruit into honestly made, premium wines that represent outstanding quality and value. All of these luscious wines come from sun-soaked, mature, Okanagan fruit and with a very reasonable price tag.

THE NAME

Like most people you probably assumed that C. C. were Chris’ initials? Me too! Actually, they stand for his middle name, Carl, and his wife`s middle name, Coelho, which means rabbit in Portuguese. Chris' branding describes his life, or more accurately, the most important part of it- his love and devotion for his wife, Betty. For 30 years, Chris believed that both he and Betty, born in 1963, were the same Chinese Zodiac sign - the Rabbit. One day, a Korean restaurateur explained to him that the Chinese New Year starts in February, and suddenly he realized that he had been a Tiger all along. Chris illustrates all of this in his branding and the names of his wines: 'The Chase', and 'The Dance' (a Rosé), are all themes coming from the pursuit of, and desire for the one woman I have loved for so many years. And one day I am going to catch her...”

THE MAN

Chris Jentsch is a man, a husband, a father and a farmer. He grew grapes for decades when he and a group of friends pondered what they would do differently if they could go back 40 years…and the answers were all the same - take more risks. This stayed with Chris and fueled the fire to turn his estate grown fruit into good, honest wine. That’s the story, no frills or gimmicks, just a guy taking risks. Chris is down to earth, kind, and lives life “one day at a time”.

OUR VINEYARDS

All of our vineyards are located on Class 1 growing sites for viniferia grapes. Our main vineyard of 63 acres is along the center of the famed “Golden Mile Bench” application to become the first ever Okanagan sub-DVA (Designated Viticultural Area). The sandy loam soils, combined with the precious south-east exposure, make these ideal wine growing conditions. This location is bordered on the west side by a now famous poplar planting and contains 8 different varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, make up the majority of the planting and are complemented by smaller blocks of Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The crown jewel is an outstanding Syrah block that produces impeccable wine year after year.

The vineyard directly behind the winery, affectionately known as the “Blue Barn” block, has the mighty Testalinden Creek flowing through the center of it. There are 2 foot bridges for crossing and a small picnic area nestled beside the Merlot.

The winery also operates the Eugenio vineyard of Betty Jentsch’s parents on the Black Sage Bench. The unique gravel loam soils with the long warm evenings produce fine vintages of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc.

The newest location for the vineyards of C.C. Jentsch Cellars is in Summerland on Chris & Betty’s home property. Sweeping along Lake Okanagan, this 4 acre vineyard has perfect south-east exposure and the massive body of water provides a thermal buffering that is second to none in spring and fall growing seasons. This Chardonnay block, planted on heavy clay soils, will begin producing its first vintage in 2014.

The people who make it happen:

Owners CHRIS & BETTY JENTSCH

VITICULTURIST & OWNER

Chris grew up in the Okanagan as a fruit farmer for most of his life. He made the switch from cherries to grapes in 2002 and grew 63 acres of vinifera for 11 years before making the decision to open his own winery. In 2012, he took the leap and turned his fruit packing warehouse into a cellar and tasting room.

AMBER PRATT (JONES) WINEMAKER

Amber grew up on Vancouver Island and moved to the Okanagan in 2009 to pursue her passion for wine. Her knowledge, impeccable palate and love for rosé had her sought after by some of the Okanagan's best wineries. She came to C.C. Jentsch Cellars with an elite background of experience at Nk'Mip Cellars, Road 13, and Black Hills Estate Winery before accepting Chris' offer to craft his mature Golden Mile Bench fruit into award winning wines.
