Details

True Grain Bread is an Old World-inspired European bakery where the craft of the Miller and Baker are honed and cherished.  Their passion is creating fresh, local, organic, handcrafted bread. Since first opening their doors in 2004 in the charming seaside village of Cowichan Bay, True Grain Bread has become internationally recognized for delivering an unparalleled bread experience. The friendly, family-owned bakery opened a second store in stunning Summerland in the summer of 2012.

Whether you visit their Cowichan Bay or Summerland location, the True Grain Bread experience is truly unique. Upon strolling through the inviting double-door entranceway, sights and smells will remind you of Europe. Peer through the glass at an authentic Austrian stone mill. Watch as certified organic grain kernels from Vancouver Island and Okanagan farms are freshly stone ground before your eyes.  Peek into the production area and watch the Bäckermeister (German Master Baker) and his team hand-scale and handcraft each individual loaf.  At the front counter, feast your eyes on +10 feet of irresistible treats; French croissants, almond croissants, pain-au-chocolat, butterflies, cinnamon swirls, cheddar twists, chocolate buns, German pretzels, and a wide assortment of addictively delicious modern wheat-free cookies.

At the core, True Grain Bread is about the bread and the craftsmanship.  Most store bought bread today is engineered from the seed, by the grain mill, and in the ingredients added to preserve the loaf.  True Grain Bread is different.  They favour seeds that pre-date engineering and grain hybridization.  Most seeds are purchased directly from the Farmer in BC.  They are stone milled at low temperatures to preserve the integrity of the grain. The loaves are crafted by hand using the grain, filtered water and sea salt, and a nut or a seed.  Some loaves only have 3 ingredients.  THAT is True Grain.

As a result of the aforementioned methods and with no added preservatives, sugars, oils or soya (one of which are in virtually all store bought bread) , many people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity can enjoy True Grain Bread.  Their issue isn’t gluten, its over-processed and engineered food.

We invite you to visit us in Cowichan Bay Village on Vancouver Island or downtown Summerland in the Okanagan to experience True Grain Bread for yourself.
