Written By Guest Writer Libations / Wine News Jun 14, 2012 Introducing – Gold Hill Winery SHARE VIA: Facebook Twitter PinterestGold Hill Winery, as the name alludes, is located in the Golden Mile area, 10 km north of Osoyoos. It is one of the South Okanagan’s newest wineries, and welcomes visitors with a full tasting bar. Surrounded by vineyards and mountains, the beauty of this rustic, farm-style winery is as captivating as its wine. Family is what brought Gurbachan and Sant Gill to the Okanagan Valley from India. It was still an orchard farm when the family bought the land in the 1980’s, but as the wine scene became more prominent they decided to convert the orchards into vineyards, keeping just a few acres of peach and cherry trees. The family currently owns a total of 65 acres of vineyard in the Okanagan Valley, with approximately 24 acres on Golden Mile, and 32 acres in the heart of Osoyoos. Both sites are planted with mostly red Bordeaux style grapes and they also have white grapes from 9 acres in Kaleden, north of Okanagan Falls. They will expand another 40 acres of ownership by the end of 2012. Growing grapes is more than a business – it’s the family’s passion. Gurbanchan believes that “quality grapes is the key to a good wine, it all starts with good vineyard management”. The family sells most of their fruit; the grapes are the backbone to a couple of renowned BC wineries. In 2009 family decided to reserve some of the plantings to make their own label. Talented winemaker Phillip Soo, crafter of multiple award-winning wines, creates wines for Gold Hill that aim to express the unique terroir that is the South Okanagan Valley. Soo blends grapes and terroir from the valley floor, hillside and mountain slopes from various appellations. Using natural techniques, the handcrafted display the aromatic profile of the best the valley has to offer. Gurbanchan, who is also a builder in India, started construction on the tasting room in November 2011, with help from family and friends. In the short span of only 6 months, the spectacular tasting room is now open to the public. His son Navi will ensure that you enjoy a memorable Okanagan wine tasting experience while savouring the view of the majestic Golden Mile. –By Van Doren Chan Gold Hill Winery29014 Hwy 97 Frontage RD Osoyoos, BCphone.1.250.495.8152 fax.1.250.495.5385 info@goldhillwinery.com website: www.goldhillwinery.com OkanaganWine SHARE VIA: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Written By: Guest Writer We get many people writing guest articles for us, as well as past contributors.
