With such favorable conditions, we are blessed with an extended gardening season. Victoria, therefore, is home to an abundant selection of farm fresh produce and many farmers markets. So folks, grab your reusable bags and your grocery lists because spring is here and market season has begun! A cornucopia of healthy eating, diverse learning, and community sharing awaits.As Victoria’s longest running outdoor market, the Moss Street Market provides residents and visitors an enjoyable, family-friendly, and delicious experience. From all across the island, farmers and artisans gather together to provide farm-fresh food, handmade wares, and lovingly prepared goods. Currently, mini-markets are open every Saturday from 10-12pm. Full market days begin on May 3, every Saturday from 10am to 2pm, and run until October.This year the market will be celebrating its 23rd season. Over 90 plus vendors will be setting up tables to offer a wide selection of locally grown produce, handmade crafts and clothing, homemade food, and live music performances. In an effort to promote sustainability and prevent waste, be sure to bring your own reusable grocery bags, as many of the vendors do not offer bags. Public washrooms are located in the Fairfield Community Association Building.In such a strong, farm-based community, the market hosts more than twenty-five local and organic farmers offering an array of vegetables, fruits, herbs, wheatgrass, honey, tuna, salmon, eggs, meat, mushrooms and sprouts. As well, market goers can find vegetable starts and plants, flowers, and seeds for the home garden. There is a great selection of prepared food vendors, too, including preserves of all types, fresh yogurt, salsa, pesto, bean dips, baked goods, chocolate, fruit and meat pies, local sea salt, freezies, ice creams, and handmade pasta. If you’re hungry for lunch, there are several food vendors to choose from too. Try Shiraz Persian food, or Japanese at Tetote (formerly Daidoco), Mexican from Tamales don Carlos, sausage buns from Galloping Goose Sausage, sample a few samosas, or a selection of tasty curries from and let us not forget the salmon burgers from the Wild West Salmon Grill.Families and caregivers are encouraged to visit the Kid’s Tent where they’ll find nature and eco-based crafts. This year the exciting Chef’s Stage program continues where local chefs will host easy to recreate food demonstrations. Each market day there will be two chefs’ demonstrations, one in the morning (10:15am to 11:45am) and one in the afternoon (12:15pm to 2:45pm).
