Written By Holly Brooke Edibles / Must Have / Restaurants / Victoria Jul 3, 2014 Lunch at Choux Choux Charcuterie SHARE VIA: Facebook Twitter PinterestEditor’s Note:Choux Choux Charcuterie changed hands in 2019 and is now Bull and Sons Delicatessen.Ask anyone in Victoria where to find the best charcuterie with the choicest selections of cured meats, pates and artisanal cheeses and you’re certain to hear the name Choux Choux Charcuterie mentioned.Located right downtown on Fort St, owners Luke and Paige offer a delicious and unique lunch menu. More than the average soup and sandwich fare, here you’re more likely to find scotch egg pork pies, chicken liver mousse, smoked rabbit and apple terrine, mortadella, bresaola, gourmet cheeses like Le Chevrot, Taleggio, Welsh Cheddar, and Pecorino, pork and duck rillettes, tapenades, olives, pickles and the list goes on.Every day offers something new, carefully thought out, and delicious. The Plat De Jour is decided each morning, so there is always a pleasant surprise on the menu and may include items like, bratwurst and potato salad, Italian sausage on polenta, tourtieres, or duck confit with lentils. Find out ahead of time what’s on for lunch by checking out Choux Choux’s Twitter feed.Picnic plates are a popular and always interesting lunch option too. These include a selection of house charcuterie, artisan cheeses, olives, pickles and house made focaccia bread. The soups are made from scratch and the sandwiches are prepared on Fol Epi bread. Each week a different charcuterie and/or pate plate is created to feature Choux Choux’s finest house meats and European cheeses. The cozy little shop houses several tables for two, inside and out to enjoy your lunch. If you’re thinking ahead to dinner, the display cases offer a wide selection of house made sausages (smoked and cured meats, all locally produced and organically raised. The cheeses themselves are an impressive collection too. All are selected seasonally and only the best are carried; goat and cow cheeses come from France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Ireland and more. Feel free to ask what’s in store as the selection is always changing and can sell out fast. There are always several house made pates to choose from such as pheasant and walnut, porcini mushroom, chicken liver mousse with green peppercorns and the pate maison (pork and pistachio), all of which are gluten free and made without any additives or preservatives.During my visit to Choux Choux the lunch menu featured the following:Plat De Jour: Duo of Elk Crepinette; an elk burger patty with sweet currents and wrapped in caul fat then pan fried. Along side the crepinette was quick seared escalope (elk steak) and a summer barley salad. $14Soup: Spring vegetable lentil with ham. Cup $4 or Bowl $6The Pate Plate: Rabbit Dijon Pate with Fol Epi baguette, house pickles, grainy mustard and olives with soup. $8.95Daily sandwich: BLT- house smoked bacon on fresh made focaccia and Rosemary Ham on a baguette. $6.50Baked Tart: Roasted leek and Pancetta with Buffalo Mozzarella. $4.50Any of the lunches can be made to go and if you’re looking to add a few extras, consider a variety of tapenades, olives, and creamy pates; the perfect items for a lovely picnic in the park. As the summer season approaches consider the gruyere cheese smokies and house made hot dogs, perfect choices for the BBQ.
