The meaning of the family name would be a sign of the importance oak wood would have in his life, as Arizu means “oak grove”. In 1890, around the time of the advent of the railroad and electricity, a seven-year-old Leoncio arrived in Argentina and settled in Mendoza, where he was welcomed by his uncle Balbino, already involved in the wine business. In 1901, still a teenager, Leoncio Arizu founded a family business producing premium wines under the name of Luigi Bosca. A century later, and four generations in, the Arizu family is still a continuous force in the Argentinean wine industry, having been a driving voice in the creation of the Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC) classification in the country, as well as a key part of the movement to export Argentina’s quality wines worldwide. This Syrah is from “El Paraíso” Vineyard, in Maipú, Mendoza, and up 780m above sea level. The high altitude preserves the crisp acidity, and the dramatic diurnal temperature shifts between day and night provide a focused intensity to the rich fruit. Purple-plum in colour, with a bold nose of black jammy fruit, black pepper, meat and dark plum. The palate is full and ripe, loaded with cherry, prune, anise, blackcurrant and spicy smoke. Ripe tannins and ample alcohol welcome BBQ beef.Rating: (click here to see what our wine ratings mean) EATrecommendsBodegas Luigi Bosca Reserva Syrah 2007Purple-plum in colour, with a bold nose of black jammy fruit, black pepper, meat and dark plum.
