Comox Valley farmers to open gates to cyclists next week

Choose one of three unique routes

July 28, 2011, Comox Valley, BC – Visitors to the Comox Valley region are in for a rare treat next week when local producers open their farms for the inaugural Comox Valley Farm Cycle Tour – a new event that combines scenic bike trails through picturesque farmland with onsite activities including demos, tours and farm stands.

Rain or shine, on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., cyclists can choose one of the three self-guided routes that range from 18 km to 58 km and include berry to dairy farms; wine tastings to heritage vegetables; sprouts to oysters and also includes the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market. The Comox Valley, located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, is known around the world for its quality culinary bounty from farmland and sea, great restaurants and year-round Farmers’ Market.

“The Comox Valley is truly a mecca for cyclists and foodies, alike,” said Marla Limousin, owner of Nature’s Way Farm and Blue Moon Winery, both featured stops on the tour, and board member for the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market. “What makes the market so popular is the farmers’ hands-on approach and product diversity. These bike tours allow you to join our local farmers on the ground, get a firsthand look at the field-to-fork process and enjoy a few fresh samples along the way – what could be better?”

The Farm Cycling Tours’ chair is Willy van Kemenade, who supported the development of the unique event that combines two of his passions – fresh food and cycling. The region is already a top destination for amateur and professional cyclists with its rolling mountains, vibrant coastlines and laidback countryside.

“Whether you like to ride a lot or prefer an easy pedal, the Comox Valley region is known for its diversity of trails that are used for sport, leisure, heritage – and now culinary experiences,” said Kemenade, a member of the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition. “With a plethora of cycling shops, knowledgeable guides and bike-friendly accommodations, this region offers the best to its two-wheeled travellers.”

Hosted by the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition and in partnership with the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market Association, Comox Valley Farmers’ Institute and Discover Comox Valley, the cost to participate in the Farm Cycling Tours is $10.
