While the shortening days creep towards the equinox, I work to stretch these last rays of sunshine summer. One way to drink in Naramata’s summer is with Lake Breeze Pinot Blanc.

Site of some of the oldest vines in Naramata (planted in 1985), the vineyard was purchased by South African centered Swiss couple, Paul and Vereena Moser. A nod to the quarter century spent in South Africa, Lake Breeze was the first Okanagan winery to plant and make wine from Pinotage. Because the word “vineyard” is typically not used in South Africa, they decided to call themselves “a Naramata Bench Wine Farm”. They named their new homestead Lake Breeze for the winds that blow across the bluffs year round.

The current owners – 2 local couples – purchased the property in 2001 and have grown the operation from less than 3,000 cases a year to over 10,000.  Pinot Blanc has proven to be their signature wine, and one of the best and most consistent examples of the grape in BC. Too many bland examples (Pinot Blah is one moniker that I’ve recently heard) has sullied opinion of this grape – but Lake Breeze will clear the clouds. Fresh red apple, nectarine skin, perfumed floral and a lively honeyed citrus on the finish holds a little summer in your glass. Bright and balanced, with enough weight to pair with scallops, peach dressed pork or Thai kissed salads.
