This is something virtually unheard of in New World wineries: Founded in 1856, Cousiño Macul is the only winery in Chile established in the 19th century that continues in the hands of the original founding family (Matías Cousiño was the founder). The company remains 100% under family control, producing limited quantities of fine wines. If you look carefully at the winery logo you’ll see it’s made up of the letters in the family name. Impressive.

And equally as impressive – the mission of Cousiño Macul is to produce world-class wines that are unmistakably Chilean, carrying the distinctive character of the Maipo Valley. One of the first wineries from Chile to make a break-through in the USA market, the winery has continued to anticipate and react to global trends, while staying true to their Alto Maipo high altitude Andes foothills terroir.

100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine opens with alluring and fragrant cedar spice, carrying into stewed black cherry, cassis, a whiff of sweet violets and savoury earth. Softly structured tannins finish with bright and juicy fruit. Old world in pedigree, Maipo intrinsically. And at this fantastic price (it hasn’t changed in years), you can very affordably have the best of both worlds. Drinking very well now, but will continue to evolve for another 6+ years.
