Cow Bay Prepares for Spot Prawn Festival

The goals of the spot prawn festivals are to highlight an environmentally sound and locally sourced product and to remind us that farmers markets don’t stop at the waters edge”  The Chefs Table Society of BC

The idea was for the Spot Prawn festival was originally hatched between local prawn fishermen and chefs to promote one of the most amazing and sustainable seafoods of our region. This year marks the festival’s third year in Cowichan Bay, and is a cooperative effort between the town of Cowichan Bay and the Pacific Prawn Fishers Association.  Special Guest at this year’s event will be Robert Clark, Executive Chef of C Restaurant in Vancouver, founding member of the Chef’s Table Society and recipient of Vancouver Magazine’s Green Chef Award for 2009 and recently awarded the 2011 Seafood Champion Award. In addition, there will be cooking demonstrations offered by the following chefs: Bill Jones (Deerholme Farm, Duncan), Brock Windsor (Stone Soup Inn, Lake Cowichan),  Ryan Zuvich (Markt, Nanaimo), Matt Horn (Cowichan Pasta Company), Dan Hudson (El Centro Cafe, Duncan).

The event promises to be a family friendly, fun day of chef demos, spot prawn sampling, music and spot prawn sales fresh off the boats. Local eateries will be featuring a spot prawn dish or menu for the week following the event. The day will be a great opportunity to learn cooking tips, sample great food and buy a fantastic local product – regarded as one of the best prawns anywhere. The fresh prawn season begins around the first week of May and usually runs for about eight weeks. Live prawns will be sold during the season at Cowichan Bay Seafoods.
