As I wrote earlier this week, the recent announcement of the 2011 Canadian Brewing Awards honoured Victoria’s Driftwood Brewing Company with the highly coveted Beer of the Year prize for their Fat Tug IPA. I couldn’t be happier (hoppier?).  I’ve tasted beer newbies on this brew many times. “You want to know what hops taste like?” I query. “Here you go.”

Certainly hoppy – that intense grapefruit citrus wakes up the senses. But this northwest styled India Pale Ale is buoyed by a hefty shove of earthy malt and saltine. Persistent resin/orange finish. Aggressively flavourful and beautifully balanced in its bitterness. Perfect choice for Beer of the Year.

Driftwood Brewing Company was founded in the spring of 2008 by two passionate and experienced brewers, Jason Meyer and Kevin Hearsum, plus an experienced craft beer marketing and sales agent, Gary Lindsay. Simply put – they brew the beer they love to drink. Lucky for us they have great taste!
