Everytime I turn around, they have a new – impressive – beer out the hopper, so to speak. I’ve written about them before, and today won’t be my last Driftwood DRINK. I’m certainly not the only one to catch the drift. Last month CAMRA Vancouver voted Driftwood Best Brewery in BC. Their Cask Old Cellar Dweller was one of my favourites at last summer’s Great Canadian Beer Fest, their Fat Tug IPA is a new staple at my house, and their special edition Singularity Russian Imperial Stout is my current carbonated crush.Singularity – in name, design and scale. The regally named Russian Imperial Stout is a style of ale inspired by brewers in the 1800’s to win over the Russian Czar. Said to be the king (czar)of stouts, RIS have ample alcohol levels and ramped up roasted and burnt malt character. Four months in Kentucky Bourbon barrels have left their mark on Singularity. Nearly opaque, it shows an alluring nose of molasses and spice, and flavours of whiskey, anise, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, espresso and an assertively addictive bitterness. So, so smooth, and rich, this is a special brew, not meant to be drink lightly. Literally – this is the price and alcohol level of some wines. Not a fair comparison at all though – this complex brew is, simply, singular.Rating: (click here to see what our wine ratings mean)EATrecommendsDriftwood Brewery Singularity Russian Imperial StoutSingularity – in name, design and scale.
