Written By Guest Writer Causes / Folks May 20, 2011 Fernwood Inn Competes in “Green Makeover” Contest SHARE VIA: Facebook Twitter PinterestVictoria, BC, – Victoria’s Fernwood Inn is a finalist in BC Hydro’s Energy Fix contest, an eco-inspired way for small businesses in BC to get a “green makeover’ by winning $35,000 in audits, tweaks, and revamps.“It’s an incredible opportunity to say the least,” said Mike Colwill. “Making our business more sustainable is very important to my sister [Sarah] and I for many reasons… not only is it about being a more responsible business; it’s an opportunity to continue our father’s work to make the planet a better place for all of us.”Mike and Sarah’s inspiration to further green the Fernwood Inn comes from their late-father Roger Colwill who constantly endeavored to help others overcome their challenges, and had a love for nature coupled with a personal integrity that inspired positive change. Mike and Sarah keep Roger’s memory and legacy alive through Victoria Green Drinks gatherings (which Roger founded), the Roger Colwill Fund for the Environment and the Fernwood Inn.Staying true to their father’s memory, the Colwill’s recently got involved with the Carrotmob contest put on by UVic students, challenging local businesses to commit to implementing green improvements in return for their patronage. The Fernwood Inn offered 100% of the revenues generated this past May 28th to improve leaky seals in their heritage building, and are now looking to go even further.“Right now it’s all about getting access to the expertise needed,” said Mike. “Winning the Energy Fix contest would provide us with the funds to do more green improvements than we could have ever hoped for.”The Fernwood Inn is one of three Vancouver Island finalists in the Energy Fix contest. BC Hydro started the contest to generate awareness about the benefits of going green. The contest is open to everyone and votes can be placed everyday up until June 3rd at www.BCHydro.com/energyfix.Will the Fernwood Inn take the win? Mike is positive either way; “Whether it’s the Fernwood Inn or another business, I hope that lots of people vote and show their support for this fantastic contest. This is what we all need more of.”For additional information on The Fernwood Inn contact Mike Colwill at (250)-889-6582For additional information about Carrotmob contact Joshua Schmidt at (250)-507-8485CommunityRestaurant NewsVictoria SHARE VIA: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Written By: Guest Writer We get many people writing guest articles for us, as well as past contributors.
