Niche Wine Co. opens their website with a succinct and all-telling statement:

We’re not a big company. We’re farmers, and making wine is what we love.

This family owned and operated winery in West Kelowna has recently released their first vintage, all from grapes grown on their Hugh and Mary Vineyard. Joanna and James Schlosser are now overseeing winemaking and marketing (snappy and memorable labels!), but you’ll still see father Jerry and mother Kathleen (plus Labradors Pinot and Baco) working the vineyards. In addition to this Foch, their inaugural release included a Rose (Pinot Noir, 28% Riesling, and 13% Chardonnay), Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Marechal Foch is a North America hybrid, bred between two species of vine (in this case Vitis Vinifera and Vitis Riparia) with the aim of gaining the positive benefits and eliminating the limiting aspects of both species. Its characteristic ‘foxy’ character is tamed here, overtaken by deep and dusty plum, minty cassis and green peppercorn spice notes. Full in the mouth, with smooth and soft tannins and a resin/pine fresh finish. If you’re looking for interesting and new local flavours, look no further. Well suited to herbed lamb or elk – the wilder qualities of each mirroring the other.
