Linnaea Farm, Cortes Island Eat Magazine

1255 Seaford Road, Mansons Landing, BC V0P 1K0, Canada

Historic Linnaea Farm is committed to organic, sustainable agriculture, food security and educational programs. Located in the heart of Cortes Island next to pristine Gunflint lake, charitable, not for profit Linnaea is looked after by eight resident stewards and home to sheep, cattle, chickens and abundant wildlife. Its 315 acres supply Cortes Island’s Natural Foods Co-op with organically grown produce and meat year round. We also support local families in spring and summer with fresh weekly Community Supported Agriculture produce, and have a regular booth stocked with the tastiest seasonal offerings at the Friday farmer’s market visited by residents and visitors. We quickly sell out every week! Our farm gate roadside stand is well stocked with veggie and flower starts ready for planting.
Educational programs include a week-long market garden intensive, permaculture design, cheese making, preserving, and black smithing. In addition to our regular programs, Linnaea Farm welcomes visitors to simply walk about the property, or to take part in organized tours. We also offer farm stays, where you can get up close and personal on a working farm. It’s a holiday your family will never forget. With lakeside accommodation and a well equipped education centre, we’re also available for group rentals where you can stage your own program, professional training, family get together, or friends getaway.
Our history stretches back more than 100 years when the land was first cleared and put into production. Our covenants are currently held by Turtle Island Earth Stewards, The Land Conservancy and Quadra Island Conservancy & Stewardship Society, a BC society managing Linnaea Farm as a not for sale land trust. The property is named after the twinflower, Linnaea borealis, which grows here in abundance.
Trails through the property are still commonly used for hiking, mountain biking or simply as shortcuts for Cortes residents and tourists. A hike up Easter Bluff is a favourite, with dramatic 180 degree panoramic views over the farm, south over the Strait of Georgia, west to Vancouver Island and east to the coast mountain range on the mainland. The stewards of Linnaea Farm are continuing this tradition of providing reasonable access and of sharing and providing resources to people from the community of Cortes Island and beyond. The local branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library is also housed here.
Subscribers to our regular e-newsletter receive information about upcoming workshops, gardening tips, recipes, product sales, events, and life on the farm. Get on our mailing list here.
