The Okanagan Wine Tour Guide by John Schreiner & Luke Whittall

The 6th edition of The Okanagan Wine Tour Guide is just what it says, a wine tour guide to the wineries located in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley and surrounding wine country. Co-written by John Schreiner, one of Canada’s most respected and prolific wine writers, and Luke Whittall, blogger, podcaster, writer, and wine educator at Okanagan College. The recently released guide is, quite simply, the most informative and current guide to touring British Columbia’s interior wine country available today. Originally titled John Schreiner’s Okanagan Wine Tour Guide, the 1st edition was published in 2006 and profiled 100 wineries. Today’s guide features updated maps, contact information, producer profiles and general wine recommendations for the 240 wineries that make up the “Okanagan Wine Industry” in 2020!

Touted as the “ultimate glove-box guide” for wine tasting and touring interior British Columbia, the book can basically be divided into two distinct sections. The first introduces readers to the geographic realities of the Okanagan, Similkameen, Thompson and Kootenays. This substantial land area is further divided into distinctive wine-growing regions. Each area, such as The Golden Mile, Black Sage Road or the Naramata Bench, is unique and is treated separately with a general overview of the geography, including soil types and topography, weather and temperatures, and vine selection. Perhaps most importantly, each region comes with a list of wineries located in the area.

The second section comprises a list of all 240 wineries that make up the Okanagan wine industry. In my opinion, this is the heart of the guide! It provides pertinent information on when the winery opened, the address, phone number, website, and the tasting room. Perhaps more importantly, it gives a thumbnail sketch of the people who are the real story behind each winery. Finally, under the heading “My Picks,” there is a brief assessment of the specific qualities of each winery’s most important wines. The book is not a buying guide, so there are few tasting notes of the wines produced. The Okanagan Wine Tour Guide is all about the stories behind each winery, its wines and winemakers, and how to get there in a rationally organized, easy-to-find way!

As with all of his many books, John Schreiner, with the help of Luke Whittall, has written in a very personal voice, a guide that explores the intricacies of the Okanagan wine industry, its people, and the influences that have shaped British Columbia’s interior wine industry.
